Pride and Stubbornness: The Question No Business Wants to Ask

Fer BalcázarOctober 2, 20269 min read

It is a universally acknowledged truth that a successful business, in possession of a great brand, must take good care of its image before the world. And yet, however widely that truth is accepted, very few owners of such fortunate businesses stop to ask themselves a far more uncomfortable question: not whether their image is well-tended, but whether anyone — in the rooms where they are not present — even bothers to mention it.

Because there is a considerable difference between being respectable and being talked about. The first is achieved through effort, through years of good conduct and solid accounting. The second either happens — or doesn't — without anyone being able to witness it.

I've been in this business for over 26 years, and I've never seen an anxiety quite like the one that plagues businesses today. They're no longer afraid of not being seen. They're afraid of not being mentioned when they can't defend themselves.

The ballroom that isn't a ballroom

Consider this thought experiment. A business owner — let's call them that, though it could just as easily be a corporation — opens a ChatGPT or Perplexity window and asks, without naming anyone in particular: «Who do you recommend for digital marketing?» or «What's the best SEO agency in Mexico?»

In that instant, in that room to which our protagonist was never invited and of which they will never know existed, something is decided. Someone is spoken well of. Or no one is mentioned at all.

AI has no favorites. No friends pulling strings. No commissions to collect. It recommends whoever it knows deeply enough — and that depth is built long before anyone asks the question.

This is the new social anxiety of the modern business owner: it's no longer enough to have good Google reviews. The question now is whether the AI assistant your client uses at 11 PM — while evaluating vendors in their pajamas — even knows you exist.

What SEO built, and what AI is changing

For decades, the logic was simple: show up on Google, be relevant. You invested in SEO — organic search engine positioning — climbed the results, and clients found you. That worked. It still works, up to a point.

The problem is that search behavior is changing quietly but steadily. A growing share of commercial queries no longer ends on a results page with ten blue links. It ends in a direct AI-generated answer, with two or three recommended names. And if your name isn't in that answer, you didn't just lose a ranking position — you simply didn't exist in that conversation.

Three disciplines have emerged from this shift, and it's worth distinguishing them because, despite sounding similar, they serve different purposes. Traditional SEO optimizes for Google to rank you in classic search results. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — optimizes for generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews to cite you as a trustworthy source. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — optimizes for your content to be the direct answer to specific questions, without the user clicking anywhere else. You can explore the differences between SEO, GEO, and AEO in our glossary if you want the full breakdown.

All three matter. And most businesses don't have any of them properly addressed.

The part I find hardest to say out loud:

I know businesses — good businesses, with real products and happy clients — that have immaculate websites, a coherent color palette, active social media accounts, and yet when someone asks ChatGPT «who does what I do in Mexico?», the AI names three different companies and none of them is mine. Or yours.

That's not a quality problem. It's an AI visibility problem — whether language models have enough structured, reliable, and consistent information about your brand to dare recommend it when no one is watching.

And here's the part many business owners don't want to hear: having a great website isn't enough. Having a great product isn't enough. Having years in the market isn't enough. AI doesn't know you by seniority — it knows you by what it can read, verify, and cross-reference across its sources.

What SEO built over years was authority with Google. What GEO and AEO build now is something similar but in different territory: **semantic authority with AI models**. And that work, if you haven't started yet, needs to start today.

The difference between existing and being mentioned

Your company can have a beautiful website, five stars on Google, and ten years of track record — and still not appear in AI responses. Not because you're bad at what you do, but because language models don't have enough reliable, structured information about you. That's what GEO and AEO address. And it's work that takes time, not magic money.

So what do you actually do with this?

First, before any strategy, you need to know where you actually stand. Don't assume. Don't take it for granted that because Google finds you, ChatGPT does too — they're different systems with different logic.

If you want a quick picture of how AI sees you today, there's [AEON42's AI visibility test](https://aeon42.com/test-ia): free, result in one minute. You describe your business, and the tool asks an AI assistant with live web search the question a real client would ask — without naming your company. You see on screen what the AI knows about you, who it recommends instead, and three concrete actions you can take. A snapshot in time, not magic. But at least you know your starting point.

The next step is longer. Building presence with AI models isn't about a technical trick or a week of work — it's a strategy of semantic content, structured data, domain authority, and consistent information over time. That's what we do through our SEO, GEO, and AEO service, and what the AEON42 platform measures continuously for those who want control in their own hands.

Why this is "part one of three"

The newsletter that seeded this post was labeled «part one of three». That's not accidental.

What I described above — the framing, the problem, the distinction between SEO, GEO, and AEO — is just the first act. The second act is how to finally listen in on that conversation that happens without you. And the third, why listening once isn't enough.

Those two parts land here over the next few weeks. If you don't want to wait for the blog, you can subscribe to the newsletter and what comes next arrives directly in your inbox — no algorithms in between, no need to remember to come back to this site.

Or if the wait is unbearable, the Play.Interactive team can move the conversation forward right now through our SEO, GEO and AEO service. No detours.

Frequently asked questions

SEO positions your site in Google's classic search results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) works to get generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — to cite you as a trustworthy source. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes your content to be the direct answer to specific questions, without an additional click. They're not mutually exclusive: solid technical SEO is still the foundation, while GEO and AEO cover the search behavior that's already shifting. In terms of order: technical SEO first — then GEO and AEO built on top.

The timeline is similar to SEO: technical improvements can show in 4 to 8 weeks, but consistent presence in AI answers generally requires 3 to 6 months of sustained work. It depends heavily on existing domain authority — if your site already has a solid track record and quality backlinks, timelines shorten. No honest shortcuts exist.

Partially. A site with strong domain authority and well-structured content has a head start, because language models consider trust signals similar to those Google uses. But Google SEO and AI visibility aren't the same thing — there are companies with excellent search rankings that barely exist in ChatGPT or Perplexity responses. GEO and AEO work addresses that specific gap.

The fastest way is the AI visibility test at aeon42.com/test-ia — free, result in one minute, nothing to install. It asks an AI assistant the question a real client would ask when looking for what you offer, without naming your company. You see what the AI knows about you, who it recommends instead, and three concrete actions. It's a snapshot of a moment, not ongoing tracking, but it tells you exactly where you're starting from.

A full technical audit, code and structure error correction, AEO and on-page optimization, semantic authority building for AI models, content strategy, advanced analytics, and off-page authority work. All with a detailed proposal after an initial brief — the proposal is free, and if the scope doesn't fit your budget, we present up to two additional adjusted options.
